Artist's Description

Red hand of Ulster set in railings at Merchant Hotel, Waring Street, Belfast. The Red Hand of Ulster (Irish: L�mh Dhearg Uladh) denotes the Irish province of Ulster. It is generally believed that this Irish Gaelic symbol originated in pagan times and was originally associated with the mythical figure Labraid L�mh Dhearg. According to myth the kingdom of Ulster had no heir. It was decided that a boat race would decide the ruler and "whosoever's hand is the first to touch the shore of Ireland, so shall he be made the king". One potential king, seeing he was losing the race cut his hand off and threw it to the shore. The hand is most likely red as it would have been covered in blood.
