Artist's Description

Red hand of Ulster set in railings at Merchant Hotel, Waring Street, Belfast. The Red Hand of Ulster (Irish: Lmh Dhearg Uladh) denotes the Irish province of Ulster. It is generally believed that this Irish Gaelic symbol originated in pagan times and was originally associated with the mythical figure Labraid Lmh Dhearg. According to myth the kingdom of Ulster had no heir. It was decided that a boat race would decide the ruler and "whosoever's hand is the first to touch the shore of Ireland, so shall he be made the king". One potential king, seeing he was losing the race cut his hand off and threw it to the shore. The hand is most likely red as it would have been covered in blood.

About Jim Orr

Jim Orr

I live in Bangor, Co. Down, Northern Ireland. Like many photographers I started when quite young and have taken pictures for as long as I can remember. In recent times I have been producing mainly monochrome images encouraged by the way light and shade play across a scene without the distraction of colour. Thank you for taking the time to look at my images. If you have any questions about my photographs or my work in general please contact me. I welcome all enquiries. I frequently add images so please check back often.
